Consumers have a 'false sense of security' when using public Wi-Fi hotspots
Brits still use public Wi-Fi for things they should not, a new report by Norton by Symantec claims. By doing so, they’re putting a lot of their personal information at risk.
The report says most consumers have a "false sense of security" when using public Wi-Fi. Almost two thirds (65 percent) feel safe when they use public Wi-Fi, and less than a fifth (19 percent) use a VPN.
Microsoft replaces Jim DuBois as CIO with Kurt DelBene
Last week we reported how Microsoft is laying off thousands of its workers as it shifts its focus towards cloud a bit more. It was reported, on multiple occasions, that it will be sales jobs, and mostly abroad, that will be nixed.
However, new media reports are now painting a different picture. Among those that left the company is Jim DuBois.
Apple will build a second data center in Denmark
Apple has just announced that it will build its second data center in Denmark powered completely by renewable energy.
In total, the project will cost $921 million and the company expects that its new data center will begin operations during the second quarter of 2019. The data center will be located in Aabenraa in southern Denmark close to the German border and it will power all of Apple's online services across Europe, including Siri, Maps, iMessage, the iTunes Store and the App Store.
Does your IT team fully understand the security pitfalls of SSDs?
Solid state drives (SSDs) are a compelling proposition for IT procurement, as they have several advantages over hard disk drives (HDDs). The lack of moving parts means they generally last longer and are more reliable. Their faster access speed enables programs to run faster. Plus, they use less power, which improves device battery life and generates less noise. Prices are dropping fast, making this less of a factor when evaluating the two technologies side-by-side.
It’s no surprise that Gartner predicts 2017 will be the year revenue from enterprise sales of SSDs surpasses that from the older, more established technology. However, if organizations don’t want to run into substantial problems further down the line, a key question must be asked. Do IT and security teams have a good enough understanding of the technology to manage it appropriately? Take the data sanitization process at the point when an SSD-based device is due to be recommissioned, recycled or resold. Are the correct methods for carrying out and validating the complete sanitization and erasure of data both known and understood? Unfortunately, our research proves they’re not.

IT decision makers concerned budget cuts will affect security
Almost two thirds of IT decision makers in the UK (61 percent) think budget cuts will leave a mark on their IT investment abilities.
This is according to a new report by Sungard Availability Services, which also reported that almost half (48 percent) of those surveyed expressed worries that their security could also be affected by budget cuts.
Kaspersky BitScout tool lets security researchers collect forensic information
Just like in a real-life crime scene, forensic evidence for cyber-crimes must not be tampered with. That's why sometimes investigations take too long -- forensic researchers need a lot of time to reach the crime scene and extract malware samples without compromising evidence.
Kaspersky Lab identified this as a huge pain point in the combat against cyber-crime, and has since released a tool to help all researchers do their work faster and with more precision.
Store and synchronize your passwords with the free KeePassXC
Accessing your data is becoming tougher with two-way authentication, multiple password entry options and having to answer 'secret' questions where you can’t always remember the answer.
The most obvious answer is to write down your information, passwords and other login information. Problem is, this is no good if you’re using your laptop on the road or working away from home.
Microsoft confirms thousands of job cuts
Earlier last week, rumors emerged about Microsoft laying off thousands of workers as it reorganizes and focuses even more on cloud computing. The Redmond giant has confirmed these speculations.
CNBC has reported that Microsoft is preparing "thousands of layoffs," mostly in sales, and mostly abroad. In total, less than 10 percent of the workforce will be laid off, and out of those that will have to look for a new job, 75 percent are outside the US.

Microsoft Workplace Analytics lets enterprises track employee productivity
In an effort to help managers better understand just how productive their workers are, Microsoft has announced a new product for its enterprise customers called Workplace Analytics that utilizes the data collected by Microsoft Graph to provide valuable insight into how employees spend their workdays.
This new product builds off of the company's MyAnalytics, which was released last year, that gave employees the ability to view their own individual productivity using data collected from their Skype history, calendars, emails and documents. The difference between this previous tool and Workplace Analytics is that now employers will also be able to view the productivity levels of their employees.

Samsung will soon be releasing its quarterly profits for the second quarter of 2017 and the company is expected to surpass Intel as the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer by revenue.
This is the first time that the South Korean electronics giant has been able to outsell Intel as a result of increased memory chip sales from April to June. Demand has soared for smartphones and servers with more powerful chips and, as a result, their sales have gone up.
