Ransomware makes up half of all malware
Ransomware is no longer a quick and easy way for cyber-criminals to get their hands on some money. It is now considered a "permanent fixture on the threat landscape" -- at least according to PhishMe’s Q2 2016 Malware Review.
The security experts’ new report says ransomware now accounts for 50 percent of all malware configurations, meaning it is now a mature business model. It also says it shows no outward signs of diminishing.
Salesforce buys Quip for $582 million
Salesforce is taking the fight to Alphabet and Microsoft with the $582 million acquisition of Quip, a document collaboration firm that competes with Alphabet’s Google Docs and Microsoft’s Office products.
The deal will be completed entirely in stock options and is Salesforce’ third acquisition in the last few months, following the £2.8 billion purchase of enterprise cloud commerce solutions provider Demandware and the acquisition of deep learning company MetaMind.

Investigating the DNC hack [Q&A]
Following uncertainty around who was responsible for the compromise of the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) servers in the US -- which was first blamed on the Russian Government and then claimed by an individual named Guccifer 2.0 -- Fidelis Cybersecurity was approached by personnel handling the investigation for the DNC to undertake an independent investigation in order to provide its perspective on the intrusion.
As part of this investigation, Fidelis analyzed the same malware and data (including file names, file sizes and IP addresses) that were used in the DNC incident. Here are the main findings.
Most enterprises lag behind in mobile security
Enterprises are still not doing enough to protect corporate data on their employee’s mobile apps and devices from cyber threats, according to a new report from MobileIron.
According to the Mobile Security and Risk Review report for Q2 2016, less than five percent of enterprises are using mobile threat detection software and only eight percent have an enforced operating system update policy in place.
Cyber security is not a priority for most UK businesses
Despite the constant warnings experts keep giving out to businesses concerning cyber-security, UK’s firms won’t be prioritizing it in the next 12 months.
This is according to a new quarterly survey by Close Brothers. Its key takeaway is that 63 percent of companies decided not to invest in better security, while the other 37 percent decided to do so.

Uber China will merge with Digi Chuxing
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced via a blog post that Uber China -- a subsidiary of the taxi-hailing app -- will merge with its biggest competitor in the region -- Didi Chuxing -- in a whopping $35 billion deal.

Tesla acquires SolarCity in a $2.6 billion deal
Tesla is buying SolarCity, a company selling solar power systems for homes and businesses. The electric car maker will shell out $2.6 billion (£1.97bn).
Tesla’s founder and CEO, Elon Musk, is the same person that is also chairman and the largest stakeowner of SolarCity. So basically, Musk is merging his two companies into one which will offer "end to end clean energy solutions". SolarCity was founded by Musk’s cousins, CEO Lyndon Rive and director Peter Rive.

Communication issues growing concern for enterprises

Russia becomes main target for DDoS attacks
There has been a huge increase in the number of DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks in the second quarter of this year, a new research report by security experts Nexusguard says.
According to Nexusguard’s Q2 2016 Threat Report, there has been more than 182,900 attacks in Q2 this year, with the majority falling onto Russia.
