Transmeta to Use Phoenix Technologies BIOS

Beginning more than two years ago, Transmeta began developing a relationship with Phoenix Technologies, the world wide leader in system enabling software. Stating that "Phoenix is the unquestioned leader in mobile BIOS and power management...[and they] willingly worked within our secrecy constraints," Transmeta announced today that the Crusoe processor would run on PhoenixBIOS, developed by Phoenix Technologies, specifically for the new Mobile Internet Computing class of PCs slated to arrive later this year. Currently, software developed by Phoenix Technologies is sold in over 70 million computers each year, as well as embedded systems and Internet appliances. IntelliPoint 3.1 Released

Microsoft has released a new version of software for use with any Microsoft Mouse, or the IntelliMouse. IntelliPoint gives your mouse full functionality, and gives you the option to customize your mouse settings to work more efficiently. This version updates the software to make it compatible with Windows 2000. You must have 13.5 MB of available disk space, and have IntelliPoint 1.1 already installed on your system. However, if you are installing to Windows 2000, you do not need IntelliPoint 1.1. The software is available in various languages, ranging from English, to Traditional Chinese, and can be downloaded by visiting the Microsoft Mice Driver Download Page.

GoTo.com Injunction Held Up in Court Today

Stating that GoTo.com "demonstrated that it is likely to succeed on the merits of its claim," a judge today upheld the injunction placed on Walt Disney earlier this year, barring it from using the Go.com logo on their website and television commercials. Claiming trademark infringement against Walt Disney, GoTo.com is seeking millions in damages and a permanent ban on the use of the Go.com logo. The logo was replaced this morning as Disney announced a new strategy to focus their web presence more on the entertainment aspect of the company. Damages could rise in the case, considering Disney was allowed to continue the use of the logo for two extra months. More to come on this impending trial.

Windows 2000 Seeing Security Problems Already

On Wednesday, Microsoft released a patch for its Windows 2000 Index Server, due to the discovery of two security holes found earlier this month. The most serious of the two, named the "Malformed Hit-Highlighting Vulnerability," which allows a malicious user to view files stored on a server, was found on January 17th. The second, a less dangerous problem, allows an attacker to view information regarding the targeted network, has been known about for several months now, although Microsoft states that it was unaware of the problem until two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the patch was not available in time for the shipping versions of Windows 2000, but it can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. Privacy Group To File Complaint Against DoubleClick

Raising the stakes in the ongoing fight over online "profiling," Internet privacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) today confirmed that it is preparing to lodge a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against one of the nation's largest Internet advertisers, DoubleClick, Inc.

Driving the complaint is mounting concern over the controversial practice of profiling, EPIC Director Marc Rotenberg told Newsbytes today.

FaceTime Uses AOL Instant Messenger

FaceTime Communications has released instant messaging software that allows customer service representatives to talk to customers online, instead of racking up expensive phone bills with tech support calls.

Through the use of FaceTime Message Exchange, customers can contact representatives to receive support on various issues. When the user "messages" the service center, they are given the message that the next available representative will be right with them. Messages can be easily routed or rerouted to the correct department whenever it is required. After talking with the support personnel, typing "end" terminates the session and the service call is completed.

E-Live Technologies Offers Online Business Solutions

E-Live Technologies, provider of online business solutions, has announced major improvements to its LiveRes online reservation software. They also provide other online software programs to help businesses keep in contact with customers and other businesses.

The first of these programs, LiveRes, provides businesses with a "live reservation center" to create and track reservations through the Internet, without the use of an operator or other personnel. It provides productivity tracking as well as one on one customer interaction, and is capable of sending e-mail confirmation of a reservation to the customer. It features an online operator switchboard and its browser-based interface is PDA and Windows CE compatible. Significant improvements have recently been made to the routing and queue engines, as well as the user interface.

Odigo 2.0 Connects to ICQ

The newest version of the Internet chat program Odigo, created by NovaWiz, now allows users to download their ICQ contact list and chat with their buddies. NovaWiz did not inform AOL that their program would connect to ICQ, and say that it was done using "ICQ-like" protocols that have been on the Internet for some time. Solaris 8 To Lauch Wednesday

Sun Microsystems has pushed up the release date of its new operating system Solaris 8 to this week, as Windows 2000 computers go on sale today. Originally, it was to be launched in February, concurrently with Windows 2000, but in an effort to beat Windows 2000, Sun decided to launch earlier.

Claiming that Solaris 8 is years ahead of Windows 2000, Sun stated that later this year, consumers should expect to see support for up to 16 servers in a cluster, as well as 100 processor support in Sun machines by the end of this year. Lawsuit Against iCraveTV Turns 'Nasty'

William Craig, the beleaguered 49-year-old president of Toronto-based iCraveTV, whose company faces a lawsuit by a group of heavyweight US and Canadian entertainment and sports programmers, said he has been thrown a "knuckleball" by the litigants, who reportedly have unearthed an outstanding divorce warrant against him.

A report in today's Toronto Globe & Mail newspaper said that Craig will appear in a Pittsburgh court, where the suit has been lodged, next Friday, but may risk arrest on the unanswered warrant.
